Futureport examines the digital transformation in ports

“Digitalisation is not a trend but a requirement for being agile and more efficient, and constitutes one of the strands of our Strategic Plan”, explained Ricardo Barkala, President of the Bilbao Port Authority, at the beginning of his speech on the first day of Futureport, earlier this morning. During his address, Barkala listed all the work carried out by the larger port authorities on the development of infrastructures and infostructures, and reminded us that the Port of Bilbao has been providing telematic services for 15 years, with an ever-growing number of users, connected companies and accreditations. “We are facing a cultural change of the first magnitude”, stressed the Port manager, “which, according to our estimates, today means a saving for our customers of 80,000 working hours per year and, for the environment, an annual reduction of 6,300 tons of CO2”.

In today’s session, Barkala gave the floor to Richard Morton, General Secretary of the International Port Community Systems Association, who chaired the debate panel discussion, and also looked at the key issues of the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, which, in his opinion, represents the progress made by the work carried out in recent years. On Thursday morning, Futureport will centre the debate on the so-called “green ports”, a concept alluding to new, smart and sustainable ports.
